What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic solution used to replace one or more missing teeth. The bridge rests on the natural teeth or implants on either side of the gap, with an artificial tooth (or teeth) suspended between them. It is a permanently fixed restoration that restores chewing function, aesthetics, and proper occlusion.

How Does a Dental Bridge Work?

The supporting (abutment) teeth are prepared by reshaping them, and an impression of the full arch is taken. The bridge is custom-fabricated in the dental laboratory and then permanently cemented onto the abutment teeth. After placement, the bridge restores a natural appearance and full chewing ability.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Dental Bridges

Advantages:

  1. Permanently fixed — no need to remove it daily.
  2. Natural appearance — zirconia or metal-ceramic materials deliver excellent aesthetics.
  3. Affordable — significantly cheaper compared to prices in Austria.
  4. Fast treatment — typically only 2–3 visits required.

Disadvantages:

  1. Abutment teeth must be ground down.
  2. The bone beneath the missing tooth root may gradually resorb over time.
  3. Interdental cleaning requires more care.

Treatment Process for a Dental Bridge

  1. Diagnostics & treatment plan — X-ray and oral examination.
  2. Abutment tooth preparation — reshaping under local anaesthetic.
  3. Impression — precise impression for a custom fit.
  4. Temporary bridge — a temporary restoration is fitted while the final bridge is made.
  5. Final bridge placement — the bridge is permanently cemented onto the abutment teeth.
  6. Check-up — fit and bite are verified.

FAQ about dental bridge

A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth, anchored to the adjacent teeth (or implants). It's recommended when a missing tooth could cause the neighboring teeth to shift, or when chewing and speech are affected.

It usually requires 2-3 dental visits over about 2-3 weeks, including tooth preparation, taking impressions, and the final placement. For implant-supported bridges, this takes longer — up to several months — due to the healing period required.

Tooth preparation is performed under local anesthesia, so it's painless. Some temporary sensitivity may occur after the bridge is placed, but it resolves quickly.

With proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, a bridge typically lasts 10-15 years on average, but with good care it can last even longer.

Special floss or an interdental brush is needed to clean under the bridge, since regular floss can't reach that area. In addition to regular brushing, a dental check-up every six months is also recommended.
