Bone grafting (Knochenaufbau) is a surgical procedure aimed at increasing the volume of bone tissue required for stable dental implant placement. When bone loss (atrophy) has occurred following tooth loss, bone grafting makes it possible to place implants securely. The procedure can be carried out with synthetic bone material, the patient’s own bone, or a combination of both.

Bone grafting (bone augmentation) is a procedure that builds up the bone volume needed to securely anchor a dental implant when the existing bone isn't sufficient, often due to long-term tooth loss or gum disease.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so it's painless. Some swelling, mild pain, or bruising may occur afterward for a few days, which can be effectively managed with medication.
Full healing and bone integration typically takes 3-6 months before implant placement can proceed, though this depends on the extent of the graft and the patient's individual healing capacity.
Options include the patient's own bone (autograft), donor bone, synthetic bone graft material, or animal-derived material (xenograft); the dentist selects the most suitable option based on the individual case.
No, it's only needed when bone loss or thinness doesn't provide enough stability for the implant. The dentist determines this based on an X-ray or CT scan.
