Sedation (Dämmerschlaf, twilight sleep) is a specialised method of anaesthesia used during dental treatments to reduce the patient’s anxiety and pain perception. The medication is administered intravenously and induces a mild sleep-like state: the patient is relaxed and semi-conscious while the dentist carries out the necessary treatment. It differs from general anaesthesia (narcosis): breathing remains continuously monitored, and the patient recovers quickly.

Conscious sedation is a calming treatment that relaxes the patient and reduces anxiety, while the patient remains awake and able to communicate. Unlike general anesthesia, it doesn't require complete loss of consciousness or respiratory support.
It's primarily recommended for patients with dental anxiety or strong fear of dental visits, those with a sensitive gag reflex, or for longer, more complex procedures (such as implant placement).
Yes, it's a safe procedure when administered under proper professional supervision. The patient's condition (pulse, blood pressure, oxygen levels) is continuously monitored throughout the treatment.
The effects typically wear off within a few hours, but driving or making important decisions isn't recommended on the day of treatment due to residual sedative effects.
