A missing tooth is not just an aesthetic problem – it affects chewing function, the alignment of surrounding teeth, bone density and self-confidence. Fortunately, modern dentistry offers a wide range of tooth replacement solutions: from traditional removable dentures to implant-supported crowns, there is an option to suit every need and budget. This article explains the most important types of dental prosthetics, the key factors to consider and the expected process – so you can make an informed decision.

Why Is It Important to Replace a Missing Tooth?

Many patients assume that a missing tooth – especially one that is not visible – is not urgent. In reality, untreated tooth loss can have serious consequences:

  • Neighbouring teeth shift into the gap, leading to bite problems.
  • The opposing tooth “over-erupts” (grows into the space), causing wear.
  • The supporting bone begins to shrink, which over time also changes the contours of the face.
  • Chewing forces are distributed unevenly, placing excessive strain on the remaining teeth.
  • Self-confidence and quality of life decline, particularly when front teeth are involved.

The sooner replacement takes place, the simpler and less costly the solution can be.

What Tooth Replacement Options Are Available?

The type of prosthetic is always determined by individual circumstances – the number of missing teeth, the condition of adjacent teeth, bone quality and the patient’s preferences. The main options are:

Dental Crown

  • When is it used? When the root of the tooth is intact but the crown is so damaged that a filling is no longer sufficient.
  • Materials: porcelain, zirconia or a metal-porcelain combination.
  • Advantages: natural appearance, high durability (10–20+ years), built on the natural root.

Dental Bridge

  • When is it used? For one or more adjacent missing teeth, provided the neighbouring teeth are healthy enough to serve as abutments.
  • How it works: the gap left by the missing tooth is filled by a connected structure anchored to the neighbouring teeth.
  • Disadvantage: the abutment teeth must be ground down, sacrificing healthy tooth structure.
  • Lifespan: 10–15 years with proper care.

Dental Implant

  • When is it used? For replacing one or more teeth where bone volume is adequate.
  • How it works: a titanium screw is placed into the jawbone (the “artificial root”), onto which a crown is built. Adjacent teeth are not affected.
  • Advantages: the most stable and natural-feeling solution, preserves bone density, lifespan can be 20–30 years or more.
  • Disadvantage: a healing period of 3–6 months is required after placement before the crown can be fitted; higher initial cost.

Removable Partial Denture

  • When is it used? When several teeth are missing and an implant or bridge is not feasible.
  • How it works: attaches to the remaining teeth using metal clasps or tooth-coloured elements.
  • Advantages: lower cost, no surgical procedure required.
  • Disadvantage: less comfortable; clasps can place long-term stress on the supporting teeth.

Full Denture (Complete Denture)

  • When is it used? When all teeth are missing from one or both jaws.
  • How it works: rests against the palate or gum ridge; a removable appliance.
  • When combined with implants, significantly more stable retention can be achieved (implant-retained denture).

What Does the Tooth Replacement Process Involve?

The exact steps depend on the type of prosthetic chosen, but the general process in most cases involves the following stages:

  • Consultation and examination: the dentist assesses the condition of the oral cavity and takes a panoramic X-ray or CT scan.
  • Treatment plan and quote: the patient receives a detailed overview of the options and expected costs.
  • Preparatory treatments (if needed): treatment of decay, periodontal therapy, tooth extraction or bone grafting if required.
  • Fabrication of the prosthetic: impressions or digital scanning are taken; the restoration is made in a dental laboratory.
  • Fitting and placement: the dentist checks the fit and bite, then secures the prosthetic.
  • Follow-up: review appointment, adjustments if necessary.

In the case of implants, the time between screw placement and fitting of the final crown is generally 3–6 months, to allow osseointegration (the process of the implant fusing with the bone) to be completed.

Which Tooth Replacement Option Is Best?

There is no single “best” solution – the right choice always depends on the individual situation. The following points help with comparison:

  • Implant: the most durable and comfortable option where bone volume permits and the patient’s general health is suitable. Higher initial investment, but pays off in the long run.
  • Bridge: a good compromise when the neighbouring teeth already need fillings or must be prepared for other reasons.
  • Removable denture: an economical alternative when an implant is not medically viable or budget constraints apply.
  • Full implant-supported denture: currently the most advanced and comfortable solution for replacing all missing teeth.

The treating dentist will always provide a personalised recommendation based on the findings of the examination.

How Should a Dental Prosthetic Be Cared For?

The longevity of a prosthetic depends greatly on daily care habits. The following tips will help maintain its condition:

  • Fixed prosthetics (crown, bridge, implant crown): brush twice daily, use dental floss or interdental brushes regularly, paying particular attention to the crown-gumline junction.
  • Removable denture: remove after meals and rinse under running water, clean daily with a denture cleanser, soak overnight in water.
  • Avoid: very hard foods (ice cubes, gnawing on bones), whitening toothpastes with abrasives, excessive biting force.
  • Regular dental check-ups: at least once a year, so the dentist can detect wear, fit issues or changes in gum health in time.

Frequently Asked Questions

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, so no pain is felt during the treatment itself. Some swelling and sensitivity may occur in the first 2–3 days after the procedure, which can be well managed with painkillers prescribed by the dentist. Most patients find the procedure easier than they had anticipated. If swelling or pain persists beyond one week, be sure to contact your treating dentist.

A properly placed and well-maintained dental implant can last a lifetime – manufacturers of the highest-quality implant systems demonstrate 20–30 years or lifelong durability in clinical studies. The most common reason an implant may loosen is peri-implantitis (inflammation around the implant) or inadequate oral hygiene. Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes also negatively affect the long-term prognosis of an implant.

This depends strongly on the type of prosthetic chosen. For a simple crown or bridge, the time from impression-taking to fitting is generally 1–2 weeks. For a dental implant, 3–6 months must be allowed after screw placement for full bone healing before the crown is made. In some cases – where anatomical conditions are favourable – same-day implant treatment is possible (teeth in a day), but this is not suitable for every patient.

Coverage for dental prosthetics varies depending on your insurance provider and the type of treatment. Dental implants, porcelain or zirconia crowns and dental bridges are generally not covered under standard health insurance plans. Some supplementary dental insurance policies (e.g. private health plans) may offer partial reimbursement. It is advisable to check with your insurer in advance to find out what level of support you may be entitled to for the specific treatment.
